Being diagnosed with prediabetes is a shock for most people, especially since there are no clear symptoms for prediabetes. In fact, most people only find out they have prediabetes after being tested for diabetes. The good news is that it’s not too late to turn things around.

The cornerstone for controlling the risk factors for type 2 diabetes is a healthy lifestyle.

Obesity and a sedentary lifestyle are two of the biggest diabetes risk factors that can be controlled.

Moderate Exercise

Exercise is beneficial, even without weight loss, for the prevention of type 2 diabetes.

Exercise does not necessarily mean you need to go to the gym. Your focus should be on being more active. Instead of asking someone to get you something, get it yourself. A brisk walk, even just for a couple of minutes every day, can make a big difference.

Weight loss can improve insulin sensitivity and blood sugar levels that can delay and even prevent a progression from prediabetes to type 2 diabetes.

  • Although water should be your beverage of choice, studies have found that coffee and tea may help you avoid diabetes due to the antioxidants they contain.
  • Optimize vitamin D levels as several studies have found that people who do not get enough vitamin D are at a higher risk of getting diabetes.


  • Avoid eating large portions of food at a time.
  • Avoid eating a lot of red meat, processed foods and sweets.
